Beautiful Puglia, Italy

October 9 to 16, 2024

Cycling through the beautiful region of Puglia, between olive groves and vineyards, trulis and blue sea!

The southernmost region of Italy geographically forms "the heel of the boot". Along impressive stretches of coastline and through beautiful olive groves and cypress trees, we cycle between the Adriatic and the Ionian Sea, from Alberobello to Lecce.

Puglia is a land of friendly and hospitable people. Although still little explored internationally, this beautiful region called Puglia is ancient farmland, full of history and beauty. Initially inhabited by Illyrians and Greeks, it was later conquered by the Romans, Germans, Normans and Ottomans. The Norman churches, the Castel del Monte and the Trullis bear witness to these times. The villages are thousands of years old, with Greco-Roman ruins, churches covered in mosaics, little white towns perched on hills, others leaning vertiginously over cliffs by the emerald sea. Some names: Locotorondo, Alberobello, Otranto, Gallipoli, Lecce.

Day 1: Individual arrival in Alberobello

Individual arrival and overnight. Unlike anything you've ever seen.

Alberobello is a unique and inimitable city as it is the only urban settlement of the so-called Trulli (cone buildings) in the whole world. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996.

In the afternoon, around 5 pm, we meet at the hotel reception for a stroll through the town center. You'll be enchanted.

Afterwards we will have our welcome dinner.

Day 2: Alberobello – Ostuni

We will cycle through the countryside to Ostuni.

Ostuni is reputed as an architectural jewel, and is commonly referred to as ´the White Town´ for its white walls and its typically white-painted architecture.

approx. 45 km

Day 3: Ostuni - surrounding Manduria

Today we will leave Ostuni and the Murge hills behind us and we will start cycling on the Salento plain, characterized by green and red colours, given by its olive trees and its red soil.

Along the way we will have the chance to visit Oria, with its beautiful historical centre and the castle built by emperor Federico II.

Today’s destination is the Manduria area, the capital of the Primitivo grapes.

approx. 60 km

Day 4: Manduria - surrounding Gallipoli

From now on we will head towards the seaside, which will accompany our bike tour between ancient coastal towers and fine sand.

We will now reach Porto Cesareo, where we suggest to enjoy a good fish-based lunch. Rolling south, our destination will be the Greek Kale Polis, today’s Gallipoli, with one of the most beautiful historic centres of Salento. Enjoy a stroll in its streets and the views of the sea that surrounds it.

approx. 70 km

Day 5: Gallipoli – Santa Maria di Leuca

Apulia swayLFCZJcC64X0xKJ-2

Today we reach the southernmost point of the Salento and the watershed to the Ionian Sea at Santa Maria di Leuca.

Being a well-known place of pilgrimage, the church is quite famous. Around the centennial a number of villas were built, which form an interesting architectonic highlight because of their absurd and fantastic stiles.

Aqui, os excêntricos amantes do “fin-de-siècle” se estabeleceram para aproveitar o isolamento dessa área.

approx. 50 km

Day 6: Santa Maria di Leuca – Otranto

Today we will cycle northwards along the Adriatic coast to Otranto, a very friendly and relaxing place.

Otranto Otranto is the most eastern point of Italy where we can visit the beautiful Cathedral and the great Aragonese Castle.

approx. 50 km

Day 7: Otranto – Lecce

Riding along the Alimini Lakes and their unique Mediterranean bush we will enter Lecce.

We arrive in Lecce in the late afternoon and take a short city tour. It's worth it!

Lecce is also known as the "Florence of the South" and is a pearl of the Baroque, full of history and a lively nightlife, full of bars and good restaurants. Lecce is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

approx. 55 km

Day 8: Lecce

After breakfast, our journey through beautiful Puglia comes to an end.

We are happy to book an extension for you.

This is a medium-level cycling tour with light climbs. Most of the route is not on cycle paths, but on roads without much traffic. When entering and leaving towns, you should expect a little more traffic. Level of difficulty: 2-3: 1 = easy; 2 = easy-middle; 3 = middle; 4 = demanding; 5 = sportive

We can organize your transfer from the arrival airport to Alberobello and from Lecce, where the trip ends, to the airport.

This trip, as described above, is subject to changes without prior notice, if necessary, for various reasons.
