the Alsace Wine Route!

09 a 16 de junho 2024

Alsace is a region in North-East of France, rich in tradition and culture, largely due to its history and location. Our cycling trip through Alsace is a unique experience that explores a part of the region between the beautiful Vosges Mountains in France and the borders of Germany and Switzerland.

Known worldwide for its picturesque villages boasting ancient churches and castles rich in history, Alsace is also highly famous for its vineyards.

The famous Route du Vin (wine route) covers at least 100 wine-producing villages between Strasbourg and Colmar, which produce some of France's finest wines.

The region also offers gourmet cuisine and has more Michelin-starred restaurants than any other region. We experience its gastronomy in refined dishes and other traditional ones, such as the famous baeckeofe.

The beauty of its traditional architecture amazes the traveler with town upon town of beautiful fairy-tale houses in half-timbered style and covered with brightly colored flowers.

Alsace is one of the smallest regions in France, though densely populated. Visitors to this region come to relax and unwind, enjoy good local food and drink, and experience some of the most beautiful scenery in all of France.

One of the most popular activities for the local people, and also for tourists, is cycling, and we offer this unique experience to those travelers who are looking for a combination of ancient European culture, breathtaking scenery, and outdoor activities.

Day 1: Arrival in Colmar!

Our journey begins in Colmar. This historic city enchants us from the very first moment. Walking through its cobblestone streets and medieval buildings, you feel as if you have stepped into a time machine.

Colmar lies on the border with Germany, thus absorbing the culture of both countries. Its well-preserved old town center houses several buildings built in the German Gothic style, as well as several old churches. The largest and most notable church is the 13th-18th century Collegiate Saint-Martin. Colmar is also the hometown of the sculptor Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi, well known for the Statue of Liberty.

At about 5pm we will have the first meeting with our guide. We take a short city tour on foot, and then we have dinner in a nice gastronomic restaurant in the city, by the river.

We will have a 3-step paired dinner at Chef Benoît David's Bord'Eau restaurant, with Jean-Yves Schillinger's signature.

Day 2: Colmar – Eguisheim – Colmar

Our guide will bring us the bikes and fit them appropriately, so that everyone is comfortable riding along the beautiful roads of Alsace.

After breakfast we set off towards Rouffach, cycling between castles, vineyards, hills and panoramic views of the Vosges mountains. We have a short climb and from the top we have a beautiful view of the Black Forest in Germany.

Then we cycle to the charming little village of Eguisheim, which is part of the Alsace wine route, and of course we will have a wine tasting.

Eguisheim is best known for the movie "Beauty and the Beast" and once there we understand why. It is one of the most beautiful villages in France and certainly one of the most famous in Alsace. Our eyes will shine with enchantment.

We will return to Colmar and take the rest of the day off to wander around the city.

Day 3: Colmar – Riquewihr

On this day we will cycle from Colmar to Riquewihr, passing through numerous flowery villages, among which Turckheim and Kaysersberg stand out.

Turckheim is an old fortified town, where we can still see the exceptionally well preserved ramparts (the city walls). The village also boasts many half-timbered houses, typical of the region. And in Kaysersberg we will explore the beautiful alleys of this 13th century imperial city.

On this special day, we will have a picnic with a surprise for our customers.

We arrive in Riquewihr, the charming little town that was also the inspiration for the film "Beauty and the Beast", a real fairy-tale town that is sure to enchant you.

And here, to end the day on a high note, we will have an exclusive 7-step paired dinner at Chef Jean Luc Brendel's gastronomic restaurant.

The restaurant is located within walking distance of the hotel.

Day 4: Riquewihr – Ribeauvillé

Today we cycle in the surroundings of Riquewihr. We will discover the charms of the Alsatian countryside and further explore the vineyards of the famous Route des Vins d'Alsace.

We even ride part of the Camino de Santiago, always on the Wine Route, and arrive in Ribeauvillé. Of course, a wine tasting couldn't be missing.

Ribeauvillé is a charming town that knows how to value its historical heritage and combines the advantages of a city with the charm of a wine village. The surrounding vineyards have existed since the Middle Ages, where we find in particular three Grands Crus, Geisberg, Kirchberg de Ribeauvillé, and Osterberg.

The town and surrounding hills are also dominated by the majestic ruins of the Three Castles of the Lords of Ribeaupierre.

We return to our lovely hotel in the charming town of Ribeauvillé and in the evening we can once again indulge ourselves in one of the town's fine dining restaurants.

We keep cycling towards the beginning of the wine route, north to Barr, passing through charming little villages and continuing to discover some castles and vineyards in the surroundings.

Châtenois, a charming fortified town located on the wine route, deserves special mention. We follow along the ramparts and descend into the town center, seduced by the narrow streets and typical houses, where every summer geraniums bloom on the balconies. Within the city walls the traditional "Fête des Remparts" is staged every year.

We reach Barr, the Alsatian capital of the Lower Rhine. It is a delight to walk through its authentic historic center with its wooden houses, carved stone porticoes, lively squares, and beautiful geraniums everywhere.

Our hotel is right there in the center and we can even relax in the hotel spa.

Day 6: Barr – Saint Odile – Barr

Today we will take a loop tour of the Barr region, including Ottrott and Mont St. Odile.

Ottrott, the land of Mont Sainte-Odile, hidden amidst the greenery, welcomes us. The winegrowers, for their part, have been enriched by their know-how with Rouge d'Ottrott", a Burgundy grape variety that has been grown in this country since the 11th century.

High on a hill is the Sainte Odile monastery, the stronghold of pilgrimage tourism in Alsace.

At an altitude of 753 m, Mont St. Odile is surrounded by a stunning natural setting. Its history goes back to the Merovingian period when, Odile, daughter of Duke Adalric, founded a monastery here, which flourished and was an influential convent for many centuries. It later became a holy place dedicated to her as the patroness of Alsace. Its history is one of great beauty. In the Middle Ages, the monastery was destroyed and then rebuilt by Herrade of Landsberg.

Today we will have a picnic and wine tasting during our tour.

Today's highlight is the charming city of Obernai, which has a rich history and spared the destruction of wars, has managed to preserve its heritage and a beautiful architectural legacy, such as its central market square surrounded by old buildings and many others.

We arrive in the city of Strasbourg, the capital of the Alsace region, which today has become even better known for being home to a number of important European institutions. In the evening we will have our farewell dinner in the hotel's pleasant restaurant.
