Denmark and Sweden by bicycle

June 30 - July 07, 2024

Denmark is ideal for a cycling trip, as it is a country perfectly adapted to bicycles. There are more than 12,000 km of signposted cycle routes throughout the country. In this small kingdom, everything is close by and always easy to reach.
We'll pass through green areas of flowery meadows, the Baltic Sea coastline and charming villages with routes linked by cycle paths.

The bicycle is the perfect choice for getting around. Let's discover a new world on two wheels.

THE "SUPERHIGHWAYS" FOR BICYCLES

Denmark's Capital Region and 23 municipalities are cooperating to create bicycle superhighways throughout the region. The so-called superhighways can be new lanes or improvements to existing cycle paths, with the aim of offering a mode of transportation that is equivalent to public transport and the car.

The cycle paths connect residential, educational and commercial areas, as well as public transport hubs and stations. The municipalities agreed on a conceptual strategy that defines the quality and criteria for an urban superhighway and a vision plan for a fully built network of 746 kilometers by 2045.

Each municipality is responsible for planning, building and financing the routes. However, they are often co-financed by the state. The network will make it easier to get from A to B by bicycle, especially on journeys between five and 30 kilometers.

Day 1: arrival in Copenhagen

The bustling Danish capital has a lot to offer. Copenhagen mixes old and new very well, the elegant with street art and the formal with the unusual. The charming Nyhavn area is full of bars and restaurants facing the harbor. The Little Mermaid is a symbol of the city. You'll get to know her story.

In the afternoon, around 5pm, we'll meet at the hotel reception, where we'll have the first meeting of the whole group and go together for a stroll through the medieval city center and up to the famous Tivoli.

Afterwards we will have our welcome dinner.

Day 2: Copenhagen - Helsingør

In the morning, right after breakfast we will leave Copenhagen heading north.

Today's stage will take us along the Öresund, the strait between Zealand in Denmark and Schonen in Sweden. The main cities of the Øresund, Copenhagen and Malmö, have been joined by the Øresund Bridge since July 1, 2000, creating the international metropolitan area known as the Øresund Region. The shortest ferry connection links the cities of Helsingør and Helsingborg.

Always overlooking the Baltic Sea, we'll soon reach the famous Bellevue beach. Just before Helsingør, we'll visit the Lousiana Museum, the most important modern art museum in Denmark.

approx. 50 km

Day 3: round tour to Sweden

A short ferry ride brings us to neighboring Sweden today.

Our cycle tour will first take us along the Swedish coast. We will pass numerous small and idyllic fishing villages as well as beautiful sandy beaches. We cycle back inland through forests, meadows and fields.

We will also take some time to visit the vibrant city of Helsingborg. For sure you will be enchanted by the rich cultural life and the picturesque old town before we return to Denmark by ferry.

2° night in Helsingør

approx. 40 km + ferry

Day 4: round tour in the surroundings

Today we can choose from different options. On another circular route we can cycle more on Swedish site, where we have access to the well-known Kattegat Trail. Even a visit of the idyllic Ven island is possible, a small nature paradise.

Alternatively, we can discover the Helsingør area and visit the famous Kronborg Castle. Our guide, after familiarizing himself with the group, can take this decision together. But those who want to can simply spend the day in our hotel spa and relax. Whatever we decide, it will certainly be a good decision.

3ª night in Helsingør

approx. 30-50 km

Day 5: HELSINGØR - HILLERØD

We will take some more time to visit the old port city of Helsingør before we continue our bike ride. The coastal resorts Hornbæk and Gilleleje will charm us and invite us to linger.

Our further route now leads away from the coast. We will pass extensive nature reserves and small lakes. We will be impressed by the many contrasts before we reach the goal of the day which is Hillerød.

If we have some time left, we can visit Frederiksborg Castle or we just treat ourselves with a good glass of wine in the hotel - both can be a great way to spend the rest of the day.

This night we will spend it in Hillerød. Hillerød

approx. 55 km

Day 6: Hillerød - Roskilde

Today's cycle tour takes us to Roskilde Bay.
On the way is the Viking settlement in Frederikssund. A cosy open-air museum that is well worth a visit. Numerous squares and places invite us to linger. The highlight, however, is our destination today: Roskilde Cathedral welcomes us.

Since the beginning of the 15th century, the cathedral has been the preferred burial church of the Danish royal family and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995.
The Viking Ship Museum is also worth a visit.

approx. 40 km

Day 7: ROSKILDE - COPENHAGUE

The last stage of our cycle tour leads us back to the starting point of our bike tour, the Danish capital Copenhagen.
From Albertslund we have access to the high-speed cycle route number C99, which leads us almost without traffic into the city center.

This super cycle route from Albertslund to Copenhagen is 17 kilometers long and connects the municipalities of Albertslund, Frederiksberg, Rødovre, Glostrup and Copenhagen.
This was the first of 45 super cycle paths planned for bicycles in Denmark's capital region.

And so, to end the trip on a high note, we arrive by bike directly in Scandinavia's bicycle capital.

approx. 40 km

Day 8: Copenhagen

After breakfast, our cycling holiday in Denmark and Sweden has come to an end.

We are happy to book an extension stay for you.

This is considered an easy cycle tour which leads through flat and soft hilly landscapes. Mostly own bike paths and small streets without much traffic. Only when entering and leaving cities you need to expect some more traffic.

Level of difficulty: 2
1 = easy; 2 = easy-middle; 3 = middle; 4 = demanding; 5 = sportive

This trip, as described above, is subject to changes without prior notice, if necessary, for various reasons.
