Cycling through Tyrol, between Austria and Italy!

September 01 - 09, 2024

The Tyrol region lies between southern Austria and northern Italy.

Tyrol is a historical region with a very complex political territorial division that includes the state of Tyrol in Austria and the province South Tyrol in Italy (also called Alto Adige). South Tyrol, together with the province of Trento, forms the autonomous region Trentino-Alto Adige.

Many inhabitants of this region migrated to Brazil. We can say that Tyrol is the cradle of Italian and Austrian immigration in Brazil. Many of our ancestors came from here.

The majority of the population is German-speaking, with just over a quarter speaking Italian as their mother tongue and a small minority speaking dolomite ladin.

Although this is a mountainous region, we will ride without much effort! I will summarize each daily route briefly so that you can understand that the routes are easy and also why.

Day 1: Arrival in Innsbruck, Austria

Welcome to the Olympic city of Innsbruck.

The guide awaits us at the hotel reception around 5 pm and we take a short city tour on foot.

This beautiful Alpine town is a popular destination for winter sports, but you will be surprised at the colorful atmosphere we find here in late summer.

At 8 pm we will have our welcome dinner with delicious local dishes!

Day 2: Innsbruck to Imst

In the morning we received our bikes and set off along this clear river.

The Inn River cycle path measures 518 kilometers from St. Moritz in Switzerland to Passau in Germany.

Our route covers a few kilometers of this international bike path, surrounded by towering mountains, and yet it is almost a completely flat.

Leaving Innsbruck we will first cycle to the famous monastery of Stams. Here we can't help but take a break to visit and have lunch.

After lunch we continue cycling gently uphill, passing through a beautiful pine forest and we can also visit the recently renovated Roman Baths. The landscape is simply breathtaking.

The route continues along the increasingly narrow Inn river valley to Imst.

In the evening we can enjoy the tranquility of this area nestled between the mountains.

  • Distance: 60 km
  • Uphill: 363 m
  • Downhill: 136 m

Day 3: Imst to Nauders

After a hearty breakfast, we ride from Imst to Landeck.

From Landeck we will take you to one of the highest places in the region. But don't worry: from Landeck we'll all go by van to Nauders. And a little later, we'll cross the border into Italy at the Rhaetian Pass, the main ridge of the Alps.

From up there, on one side we see the sky-high glaciers next to mountain lakes and idyllic pastures, and a little further down, many orchards and green meadows.

Here, with this lovely and renowned view we will again hop on our bikes and continue down this beautiful path.

The little town of Rhaetia is located 1,500 meters above sea level on the pass of the same name, which marks the border between Austria and Italy. At Lake Rhaetia we will find one of the most famous photo motifs in South Tyrol - the sunken tower of the Altgraun church.

Enjoy your first night in South Tyrol, or "Alto Adige".

  • Distance: 60 km
  • Uphill: 104 m
  • Downhill: 114 m
  • Uphill 2: 177 m
  • Downhill 2: 4 m

Day 4: St. Nauders to Merano

We start the day with another short climb and cycle down to Lago di Resia, with its famous submerged town church tower jutting out of the lake. We'll certainly have plenty of time to rest and take lots of photos in this picturesque spot.

We continue along a beautiful cycle path to Mals and Glurns, the smallest town in the Alpine region, with its perfectly preserved medieval walls. A short transfer will take us to Schlanders, from where we continue by bike to our destination of the day, Merano.

Today we'll cross the entire Venosta Valley, about 1,400 m above sea level, to Merano, 350 m above sea level. Much of the time we'll be following the course of the River Adige.

Merano is a bustling city, largely surrounded by subtropical flora. How about taking an evening stroll along the Passer promenade?

  • Distance: 65 km
  • Uphill: 82 m
  • Downhill: 1,242 m

Day 5: Merano

If you want to relax today, don't worry, you can enjoy a day at the spa, simply do nothing or, alternatively, go shopping in Merano's famous galleries.

But there's no shortage of activity options: we'll have the opportunity to go cycling in the Passeier valley, which you're certain to love, and we can visit the birthplace of Tyrol's freedom fighter, Andreas Hofer. Alternatively, we can walk the famous Tappeiner trail.  Whatever we decide, the extraordinary landscape will enchant us.

Merano is home to some of the best apples in Europe.

2nd overnight stay in Merano

Day 6: Merano - Bolzano - Appiano

Today's route will take us through Lana to Bolzano, the capital of South Tyrol, and then on to the vineyard region.

There are many attractions along the way today. The panoramic view during the ascent with the cable car to Soprabolzano/Renon is divine.

The region also has much to offer in culinary terms: asparagus in Terlan, tasty chestnuts in Nals, and, of great importance, excellent wines that seduce many palates.

A well-deserved stop in Bolzano to grab a cup of coffee and enjoy the cheerful, relaxed atmosphere in the busy pedestrian zone.

Then we'll continue along the South Tyrolean Wine Route, passing several vineyards, orchards and many fortresses, castles and ruins.

  • Distance: 50 km
  • Uphill: 97 m
  • Downhill: 120 m

Day 7: Appiano region

We pedal along the famous "Wine Route" of the South Tyrol region. Vineyards, ancient castles, small lakes and small traditional villages will accompany us on our short trip, which is a round trip today.

There are many vineyards throughout the region and a beautiful landscape. We ride the first few kilometers through the vineyards of Appiano, climbing slightly to Caldaro and from there, we descend to the idyllic lake of the same name. Lake Caldaro is inviting. How about a dip?

We'll also visit a small winery, where we'll have the chance to learn a lot about wine production. Of course, we also need to taste them! Appiano, or Eppan in German, is an exceptional region.

  • Distance: 25 km
  • Uphill: 198 m
  • Downhill: 247 m

Day 8: Auer - Trento

Our journey continues along the Adige River through orchards to Salorno, where South Tyrol ends. This region, which, although located within Italy, is predominantly German-speaking.

The final destination of our trip is the city of Trento, with its old historical center, its very beautiful square with the cathedral and the castle of Buonconsiglio.

Our hotel, the Grand Hotel Trento is a beautiful and pleasant historical hotel in the Trento region.

And tonight we'll have our farewell dinner at a local restaurant.

  • Distance: 60 km
  • Uphill: 96 m
  • Downhill: 152 m

Day 9: Trento

Here, after breakfast, our trip through the beautiful Tyrol region comes to an end!

This trip, as described above, is subject to changes without prior notice, if necessary, for various reasons.
