2º dia – Christchurch - Estação Braemar, Lago Pukaki

Today will be our first day on a bike, but in the morning we will have a transfer heading south across the plains to McKenzie Country, on the shores of Lake Pukaki.

There we take our bikes and ride from Mount Cook Station to Tommy Roten, always with the view of Mount Cook in the background. Then we cycle back along trails beside the lake to our accommodation on a High Country Station, where we spend the night.

Tonight's meal will be a hearty High-Country feast.

Day 3 – Braemar Station - Lake Ohau - Omarama

After a hearty rural breakfast we will be on the bus for a short time, driving along Lake Pukaki, known for the battle scenes in the movie “The Hobbit”, to reach our starting point for today's tour, on the shores of Lake Ohau.

Here, we will enjoy a fabulous view of the lake and the Ben Ohau Range, and start the first leg of today's cycling which is on the purpose-built trail along the shore of Lake Ohau and across lake Middleton. We continue to Lake Ohau Lodge where we can enjoy a coffee while overlooking the lake.

From there, a challenging but spectacular 19km trail awaits us, with an ascent to the high point of Tarnbrae, then descending to Quailburn and enjoy a picnic lunch break at the historic woolshed. The final leg is an easy descent from Quailburn Road and a short distance along the country road to Omarama and to our accommodation.

After a delightful day of cycling, a good option is to relax your body in the hot tubs at Omarama.

After breakfast , we ride our bikes for a leisurely ride from Omarama along Lake Bennato to Sailors Cutting. Then there's a favourite ride on a new section of the A2O trail that will take us up, over and around a few hills, often along the lake to Benmore Dam. This is very scenic, a spectacular part of the tour, also rewarding and challenging, with plenty of vantage points for great photos.

We will have time to relax and enjoy a picnic lunch before loading the bikes into the van and heading to Clyde. We'll enjoy the scenic drive to this historic gold mining town, where we'll be staying for the night and you will be dining at a recommended restaurant.

Bike route: Omarama – Lake Benmore Dam

Distance: 31 km

Meals: Café da manhã, almoço,

Day 5 – Clyde - Bannockburn - Arrowtown

In the morning, we travel in the van a short distance to the start of the stunning Roxburgh Gorge trail.

A 10km ride is followed by stunning NZ Hamilton Jet boat from Doctors Point to Shingle Greek. This is a thrilling informative boat trip. Be sure to hold on to your hat as you take a "Hamiton spin”.

The boat drivers will guide us through the gorge, sharing the stories of the gold mining era, which was only 160 years ago. There are still many ruins of the stone huts where they lived along the hillside. We see how life has changed, those were very difficult times.

Back on land, we'll have a gentle climb and a 13 km ride to the Roxburgh Dam, where we'll have a picnic lunch.

After lunch, we'll head back to Bannockburn and visit a few wineries, famous for Pinot noir from New Zealand, before heading through the famous Kawarau Gorge to our accommodation in Arrowtown.

Of course we will have a New Zealand wines tasting.

For dinner, we will recommend you some great options in Arrowtown.

Bike route: Trail Roxborough Gorge

Distance: 22 km

Day 6 – Arrowtown and Queenstown

We don't have any bike rides planned this morning, but it's time to explore this picturesque little gold mining town!

Stroll through historic Arrowtown and enjoy some shopping, local cafés and art galleries, or we can head to Queenstown to enjoy this famous tourist town.

Lunch is at your leisure, but don’t be late to meet the boat if you take the option of visiting Walter Peak Station.

Otherwise there are plenty of wineries to visit, or go for a gentle ride around the Queenstown Basin cycle trails, - or combine some riding and wine visits!

For the afternoon there is the option of boarding the beautiful old iconic steamboat ‘The Earnslaw’ on a ride across lake Wakatipu.

Distance: 0-20 km

7º dia – Arrowtown - Fox Glacier

Today we're going to the West Coast!

Before that, though, we'll take a short bike ride along the Kawarau River to the famous AJ Hacket Bungy.

Next, we'll visit a local High-Country Homestead at Lake Hawea and enjoy local hospitality with iconic lake views for a picnic lunch and local wines.

In the afternoon, we'll continue towards the west coast to the Fox Glacier, with a stop along the way at the sparkling blue and green waters of the Blue Pools, near Makarora.

Tonight we will be staying at Fox Glacier.

Weather permitting, a panoramic helicopter ride to see the glacier can be a beautiful adventure.

Day 8 – Fox Glacier - Ross - Hokitika

This morning we will drive north to the small gold mining town of Ross and begin our tour of the West Coast Wilderness Trail, following an old railway line north.

After a short ride, we'll make a stop at the West Coast Treetop walkway. Here you will be able to walk along a 450 m steel platform, suspended up to 150 feet. From up there you will have a very different perspective of the forest.

The trail then heads inland through native forest with towering rimu trees and on to the bustling coast of Hokitika.

Stay in our accommodation in Hokitika for one night and enjoy the hospitality of the local west coast.

Bike route: Ross – Hokitika

Day 9 – Hokitika - Kumara

Today we'll continue on the West Coast Wilderness Trail, with virgin rainforest and huge Podocarp trees, as well as serene canals and streams.

The first section features an impressive water race to Lake Kaniere. From there, the trail follows a road through farmland and native forest to the Arahura River, where the trail leaves the road and climbs along a well-marked trail to "Cowboy Paradise".

Here galleries occupy refurbished shops and the recently restored historic Theatre Royal Hotel, circa 1876, takes pride of place on the main street, the West Coast`s only restored miners’ hotel, and once world-renowned theatre.

We settle in here for the night and dine in, reminiscing and sharing stories from our South Island Cycle tour, apart from a final short burst, we are at the end of our action-packed cycling holiday.

Bike route: Hokitika – Milltown – Kumara

Distance: 72 km

Meals: Breakfast, lunch

10º dia – Kumara - Greymouth - Christchurch

Today we finish the West Coast Wilderness Trail, cycling through farmland, through native bushland, alongside the bustling coastline and finally along the banks of the Grey River to downtown Greymouth.

This is where we finish the cycling part of the trip and take the TranzAlpine scenic train to cross Arthur's Pass and return to Christchurch. Our guide and van will be miraculously present at the train station to take us back to the hotel.
