The Azores archipelago is made up of 9 islands, originating from volcanic activity. The first island of the archipelago that appeared on the surface of the sea was Santa Maria, about 8.1 million years ago. It was followed, in chronological order, by São Miguel, Terceira, Graciosa, Flores, Faial, Corvo, São Jorge and, the youngest, Pico.
Politically, the Azores are an autonomous region integrated into the Portuguese Republic since 1976. The autonomous region of the Azores is self-governing and has broad legislative autonomy.
